Which Actors in Amsterdam Are Interested in Forging Doughnut Deals to Move the City more into the Safe and Just Space of the Doughnut?

Doughnut Economics has found fertile ground in Amsterdam. The municipality has included the framework within it’s Circular Economy program, recognizing the importance of both the ecological boundaries of Earth and the social foundation we all need to be able to stand on. How can we develop a safe and just space for all inhabitants without overshooting the ecological ceiling. What is the role of citizens and businesses?

Aligning Ambitions

More and more actors are inspired by Doughnut Economics. The formation of a Doughnut Coalition in Amsterdam is prove of this. It is a recognition that diverse actors have a part to play in co-creating the 21st century economy.

The coalition’s mission is to ensure all doughnut inspired action effectively adds up to the systemic change that’s urgently needed, by acting as a network of doughnut inspired change agents to connect the dots, learn about the conditions required and measure change in yearly reports.

Our interest at this stage in particular is how we can support local, neighborhood initiatives to be part of this movement. How can we create doughnut deals where civic society works together with governments and businesses and how can this ambition best be aligned with the interests and ambitions of each stakeholder.

Doughnut Deals

Initiated by Cocratos, Amsterdam saw the making of the first Doughnut Deals in the fall of 2019. On the basis of this experience we want to explore what the definition of a doughnut deal is, what the early learnings are and what is required to scale the model to the rest of the City.

One of the ambitions formulated in the societal agreement Ma.ak is the execution of 20 Doughnut Deals. We want to help make this happen!

Project Goals

The main goal of our exploration is to better understand how Doughnut Deals, in particular where citizens are involved as stakeholder, can help move the City further into the doughnut and what is needed to forge these Doughnut Deals and help them with a successful execution.

Some of the questions we want to answer are:

  • Which parties are willing to contribute to the creation of (a minimum of) 20 Doughnut Deals in the next 5 years?
  • How can civic society get involved in creating these Doughnut Deals?
  • What are the available resources of all actors involved and how can we combine these into successful Doughnut Deals?
  • What is the added value of the Doughnut Economics framework in helping citizen and neighborhood initiatives in making their plans more impactful, organizing themselves better and increasing their opportunity for scaling?
  • Is it possible to create an acceleration program for Doughnut Deals and how would this look like?
